How are you and your team getting on through this strange time? Is working from home new to most of the team?
I thought I would share a few simple things that we have been doing to increase communication and keep the team culture strong.
Daily Company-Wide Stand Up Video Call
Our daily stand-ups are more than just finding out what everyone has been working on and if we are on track.
They are to see everyone and have a catch-up over our morning coffee, to discuss non-work-related things such as what TV series people are watching, books they are reading, exercise they are taking. These conversations are also allowing us to share our experiences of this pandemic, allowing us to share some interesting observations into what’s happening in different areas across London, through everyone’s excursions e.g Victoria Park in Hackney being closed.
Other highlights have included: Mike kindly showing off his trophies, including his UCL brainy mug, Tristan still thinking he looks like George Clooney and Millie’s prime setup absorbing some rays through the window.
This kind of contact is also really important for people to feel connected and for the inter-personal relationships to remain strong.
Slack Emoji Competition
Slack is a fantastic tool to collaborate as a team through instant messaging and is becoming increasingly more important with everyone working from home. To increase the level of communication we introduced an emoji competition, awarding the best use of emojis each day.
These have included emojis of: Churchill, Pavlos, Marcus, Boris Johnson, Toilet paper and Dancing Lisa. Here are a couple, as you can see Pavlos is currently in the lead:
If you can’t meet with someone, why not send them a voucher so they can pop to Starbucks (during their daily exercise slot, obviously) and share a morning cuppa with you.
Social distancing shouldn’t mean that we feel socially distant to the extent of complete isolation. We have found a virtual coffee to be a great way of connecting with people outside of our business in an informal, and actually quite enjoyable, way.
Team Playlists and Recommendations
As we can no longer pop our song requests on the office Sonos we are keeping everyone up to speed with what tunes are getting us through the day. There is a real selection coming out if you would like some inspiration.
We have had:
- Blanck Mass
- Luke Abbott
- Mumford and Sons
- Magic FM
- Metallica — Am I Evil?
- Gioli & Assia
- Philip Glass. Einstein on the Beach
- Leifur James
What are you doing?
Please share what your teams are doing to boost morale and keep the communication going — we would love to hear what other ideas companies have been implementing.
Let’s help each other get through this tough time.
